  • Aquatic centre operators braced for massive clean up and repairs

Operators of our public swimming pools are bracing themselves for a massive clean up operation after the recent flooding events that have devasted parts of the Central Coast, Hunter Valley, and Mid North Coast.   After days of torrential rain and flooding, operators are only now just returning to their facilities to begin the process of assessing any damage to plant and infrastructure. While many residents in these communities will be focused on returning to their own properties, the floodwaters around Kempsey and Taree are slowly receding making it extremely difficult for pool operators to access assistance for the cleanup.   The local aquatic centre provides an area of sanctuary for many local residents to recreate, exercise and create social connections. Further damage to these community facilities from the recent floods, will only add to the already over stressed budget for councils to maintain these assets. Whilst many facility managers are now prepared to deal with these events, the shut down times, burden on staff, as well as the clean up only adds to the impact and severity of managing a community facility in times of disaster.   Over the coming weeks, Royal Life Saving extends their best wishes to all facility operators and their team for the upcoming clean up and repairs. It is suitable for both new and existing pools, with flexible installation that can replace standard lighting with high-efficiency LED technology. In addition to its drowning detection capabilities, the AngelEye system includes a suite of operational and data-driven solutions, collectively known as Safeguard. These features have been refined through years of operational use and can be tailored to meet each facility’s unique needs. Safeguard includes: Real-time headcount tracking and patron trend analysis Ratio control to monitor swimmer-to-lifeguard requirements After-hours access control integrated with facility security Water treatment integration for energy-efficient filtration and heating AngelEye for Trainers – a video analysis tool for swim coaches to improve technique and performance SET is proud to lead the way in aquatic safety, delivering cutting-edge technology and peace of mind to pool operators and communities across Australia. • New learn to swim program to deliver real results

The Minns Labor Government today announced 15 learn to swim providers had been appointed to deliver its new State-wide learn to swim program. Under the new program, those most at-risk of drowning will be able to access as many as 10 lessons completely free of charge to ensure they develop basic swimming and anti-drowning skills. The providers will deliver free learn to swim and water safety lessons to all major at-risk demographics including people from low socioeconomic groups, multicultural communities, First Nations people and people in regional areas. Recent drowning statistics have shown that the previous approach was not working, it showed that people born overseas and those living in the most disadvantaged areas of NSW are at the highest risk of drowning. The providers will commence delivery of the learn to swim programs in the coming months. NSW residents can find their local program by visiting: https://www.sport.nsw.gov.au/learn-to-swim-program Royal Life Saving NSW welcomes this critical investment in water safety education. Minister for Sport Steve Kamper: “Being able to swim at your local pool, beach or river is one of the best things about living in NSW. “The NSW Government is supporting communities at the highest risk of drowning by funding the delivery of free learn to swim and water safety lessons by learn to swim providers at swimming pools across NSW. “Critically, it will mean more NSW residents can swim safely next summer and provide cost-of-living relief at a time when those groups need it most. “This was reinforced by the results of the National Drowning Report 2024 that found multicultural communities, disadvantaged communities and people living in regional areas had higher rates of drowning than other parts of the community. “The learn to swim and water safety programs delivered by the providers announced today will provide our most at risk members of the community with vital swimming and water safety skills.” Lord Mayor of City of Parramatta Councillor Martin Zaiter said: “Learning to swim is an important life skill, and here at Parramatta Aquatic Centre, we have the best facilities to bring people together and teach them how to swim. “Since opening in 2023, Parramatta Aquatic Centre has had over a million people through the turnstiles, with about 13,000 people on average visiting each week this summer. “We have local residents from 128 nationalities who speak 117 languages, so it’s vital that we support people of all ages and backgrounds to learn to swim. “This investment by the NSW Government will help us deliver these essential Learn to Swim classes. This funding will not only save lives but help build community and lifelong skills.” Chief Executive Officer Royal Life Saving Society - Australia (NSW, ACT, Tasmania) Michael Ilinsky said: “Royal Life Saving NSW welcomes this critical investment in water safety education. Taking high-quality programs directly to communities in need will have a lasting impact. “After a challenging summer, this initiative ensures that more individuals—especially those at risk—gain vital water safety skills for life. “Learning to swim is a life skill. This government funding will provide many with their first aquatic experience, preparing them for a lifetime of safe aquatic participation. “Royal Life Saving NSW applauds this activation, which prioritises access to quality water safety programs in the communities that need them most. “This initiative will break down barriers, ensuring participants, regardless of background, have the opportunity to learn vital swimming and water safety skills.” If you have any enquiries about these programs or how you can get involved, please contact: swimandsurvive@royalnsw.com.au

  • Making Waves with SwimVac 2025

SwimVac is a vital initiative providing swimming and water safety education across New South Wales. In 2025, the program spanned 49 venues, engaged 52 dedicated staff members, and welcomed 2,217 enrolments over two action-packed weeks. It continues to make a significant impact, equipping children with essential skills to stay safe in and around water. Among the dedicated teachers in the program, Sue and Marg have played a significant role in shaping the SwimVac experience in Jindera. Their journey began in 2021 when COVID-19 restrictions limited school-based swimming programs, leaving them without their usual teaching opportunities. Determined to continue making a difference, Marg suggested applying for a SwimVac position in Jindera, a rural town near her daughter’s home. Their enthusiasm was evident—they listed Jindera as their first, second, and third choice. To their delight, they were accepted. From the moment they arrived, Sue and Marg embraced their new roles, finding immense joy in sharing their aquatic expertise with the Jindera community. Parents were amazed by the rapid progress their children made and appreciated the dedication of two teachers who had travelled from Sydney to support their town. Many asked if they would return the following year, and with such a warm reception, the decision was easy. As word of their program spread, enrolments grew year after year. By 2023, the demand had become so great that Royal Life Saving NSW sent a film crew to Jindera to capture the essence of the program for a promotional video. Seeing their work recognised in this way reinforced their commitment to teaching swimming and water safety through SwimVac. This year, their program expanded once again, with both teachers working full-day shifts. Over time, they had the privilege of watching students grow from hesitant preschool beginners into confident, skilled swimmers. Seeing returning students thrive has been one of the most rewarding aspects of their teaching experience. Some of their most memorable moments include: Witnessing young children overcome their fear of water, taking their feet off the floor for the first time, submerging, and exploring movement in the water. Watching students initially terrified of deep water gain the confidence to jump in and return to safety on their own. One particular story stands out—a parent shared how her son, once uncertain in the water, had fallen in during a beach holiday. Thanks to the skills he had learned in SwimVac, he was able to stay calm and get himself to safety. It was a powerful reminder of the lasting impact of their teaching. Rural communities deeply appreciate those who travel to support their children’s education, and over the years, Sue and Marg have become cherished members of the Jindera community. Teaching in SwimVac has become a highlight of their year, and they continue to look forward to making a difference, one lesson at a time. For those passionate about the water and eager to work with children, Sue and Marg highly recommend joining SwimVac. It is a unique opportunity to inspire confidence, instil essential life skills, and witness the joy of children achieving what once seemed impossible. The rewards go far beyond the smiles—they are the lifelong skills and confidence that every student carries forward from the program. • NSW Athletes Shine at the 2025 Australian Pool Lifesaving Championships

The Australian Pool Lifesaving Championships (APLSC) took place from 16-18 January, hosted by New South Wales at the Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre. This prestigious venue provided the perfect setting for athletes from all states and territories across Australia to compete at a high level in various speed and initiative events. NSW entered both an Interstate and Development Team, consisting of 29 athletes across the two squads. The Championships began on Thursday, 16 January, with events including the 200m Obstacle Race, 4x50m Obstacle Relay, 12.5m Line Throw, and 100m Manikin Carry. NSW athletes put in an impressive performance on Day One, earning 3 Bronze, 6 Silver, and 6 Gold medals across both individual and team events. The U19 age group also competed in the CPR event, with the U19 women achieving strong results, finishing 4th, 5th, and 7th. On Day Two, athletes competed in three speed events: the 100m Manikin Carry, 4x25m Manikin Carry Relay, and 100m Rescue Medley. NSW earned 1 Bronze and 6 Silver medals. Later that day, our NSW teams competed in the Simulated Emergency Response Competition (SERC), where emergency scenarios were staged in the competition pool by volunteer actors. Teams had two minutes to save as many patients as possible while demonstrating key lifesaving and first aid skills. Both the NSW State and Development SERC teams performed extremely well, with the U19 State Team claiming a gold medal in their age category. Day two also featured the CPR competition for the U16 and Open athletes. NSW earned two gold medals, with Caleb Pryce winning in the U16 Men’s competition and Holly Holmesby securing the top spot in the Open Women’s category. Additionally, Nick Hodgers took silver in the Open Men’s competition. A strong overall performance in the Open age category led to NSW being crowned the CPR Overall Open Team Champion. The final day focused on speed and relay events, including the 50m Manikin Carry, 200m Superlifesaver, 4x50m Medley Relay, 8x50m Fin Relay, and 4x50m Pool Lifesaver Relay. NSW continued their success, earning 5 Bronze, 5 Silver, and 2 Gold medals. It was exciting to see our teams come together for the relay events, with athletes cheering each other on from the grandstand and poolside.   A special mention goes to the NSW Lifesaving Clubs that entered teams in the Interclub Competition, providing an excellent opportunity for them to compete at a national level and earn points for their clubs. Parramatta City had six athletes, with several excelling in the U14 events. Alun Griffiths from the 60 & Over category was the top point scorer for his age category – well done, Alun! Enfield entered three athletes, all of whom did a fantastic job, with a special mention for their volunteer work as officials and actors during the SERC event. Hills Swimming & Lifesaving Club fielded a strong team of nine athletes, ranging from 11 to 66 years old. Congratulations to all those who competed in the CPR competition as they were awarded the CPR Competition Encouragement Award, receiving a brand-new Little Anne Manikin and a gift voucher for their club. Engadine Lifesaving Club also had seven athletes, many of whom were competing at such a high level for the first time. A notable mention goes to Jake Fitzgerald, who, at just 12 years old, entered the U16 CPR competition and earned a gold medal, proving that it’s never too early to learn CPR and how to respond to emergencies!   Following the final day of competition, athletes, coaches, managers, and officials gathered for the Presentation Function at The Epping Club. Results were announced, and many of our NSW athletes were honoured with Perpetual Trophies, with Brayden Woodford from our NSW State Team being named Male Lifesaver of the Meet. The Western Australian Team took top honours, claiming the Interstate Overall Championship and the Sir Percy Joske Trophy. All in all, the Championships were a great success, with the NSW State Team securing third place in the overall Interstate Point Score. A special thank you to Head Coach Ethan Garland for keeping the athletes focused, refining their skills, and motivating them when needed. State Team Manager Rob Dale and Development Team Manager Sarah Fitzgerald also played important roles in keeping the team organised, from attending daily meetings and overseeing event entries to preparing outfits for the presentation function – they dedicated their time to ensuring every team member had an enjoyable experience at APLSC. We look forward to APLSC 2026, which will be hosted by Western Australia in Perth in June. After such a successful event in Sydney, we are confident that many of our athletes will be inspired to apply for the NSW State Teams and have a chance to compete in Perth next year!

  • Keep Your Cool at the Pool campaign

With multiple recent reports this summer of lifeguards being violently assaulted, abused and even spat on, Royal Life Saving Australia is condemning all violence, abuse and aggression directed at lifeguards and swim teachers, and calling for patrons to Keep Their Cool at the Pool. With over 2,000 reported incidents of abuse, violence, and aggression directed at staff working in aquatic facilities around the country, Royal Life Saving has launched the ‘Keep Your Cool at the Pool’ campaign, which sets clear behavioural expectations for patrons and calls for users of aquatic facilities to treat each other and staff respectfully.   “Lifeguards and swim teachers provide an essential role to the provision of recreation services and they are there to keep everyone safe at our local pool” said Jason Phillips, RLS Aquatic Industry Development Manager. “Often these facility staff are young and working in small teams in regional centres, who at times struggle to recruit Lifeguards and Swim and Teachers. We need to ensure they are protected and respected at all times”.   “This campaign has been developed to reinforce a culture of respect, cooperation, and zero-tolerance for aggression in aquatic facilities,” said Royal Life Saving General Manager – Capability and Industry RJ Houston. “Aquatic facilities should be safe spaces not only for swimming but for staff to work. That’s why we’re encouraging everyone to ‘Keep Their Cool at the Pool’ this summer and support our lifeguards and swim teachers by standing against occupational violence and aggression.”   The ‘Keep You Cool by the Pool’ campaign has garnered strong support from aquatic industry leaders. Belgravia Group Manager - Health & Safety Scott Vanderheyden emphasised the importance of respect for lifeguards and swim teachers in the community. “Unfortunately, lifeguards and swim teachers are often abused for providing basic safety instructions to users, such as to keep watch over their children or use a particular area of the facility.   “This can lead to hesitation in providing safety instructions promptly, which is the last thing we want from our lifeguards and swim teachers, as their guidance is essential for everyone’s safety. It’s crucial for all pool users to show respect to lifeguards and swim teachers during their visit,” said Vanderheyden.   The 'Keep Your Cool at the Pool' campaign aims to: Support the safety and wellbeing of staff working in aquatic facilities Improve patron safety and wellbeing by encouraging responsible behaviour Encourage a national standard in appropriate patron behaviour at aquatic facilities Improve the confidence of lifeguards, swim teachers and reception staff in delivering safety instructions to patrons by minimising the instances of aggression and abuse Support the sector in delivering critical support for the aquatic workforce Support improvements to the attractiveness of employment in industry and retention of talent   For more information please visit https://www.royallifesaving.com.au/Aquatic-Risk-and-Guidelines/safety-programs/keep-your-cool-at-the-pool

  • Royal Life Saving Champions AI Aquatic Safety Technology with Lynxight

Royal Life Saving – Australia research has shown that last year there were 8,000 lifeguard rescues at public pools, but tragically 6 drowning deaths and an estimated 18 non-fatal drownings. Every improvement to lifeguard detection and response should be investigated by pool owners and operators and celebrated.   Royal Life Saving continues to champion aquatic safety innovation, recently hosting successful demonstration events showcasing Lynxight’s AI-powered drowning prevention technology. These events highlighted how cutting-edge technology can complement lifeguards in creating safer aquatic environments.   The demo days, held in partnership with Life Saving Victoria, Royal Life Saving New South Wales & Royal Life Saving Queensland, took place at Maribyrnong Aquatic Centre in Victoria, Oran Park Leisure Centre in New South Wales and Gould Adams Aquatic Centre in Queensland.   Attendees, including aquatic facility operators, managers, and safety authorities, witnessed live demonstrations of Lynxight’s capabilities, such as real-time monitoring, incident detection, and predictive analytics.   “This technology empowers lifeguards with tools to respond faster and more effectively,” said Dan Mulvey, General Manager of Lynxight. “We’re grateful to Royal Life Saving for their collaboration and commitment to innovation in aquatic safety.”   Lynxight’s AI system, which uses overhead cameras and specialist software to detect unusual water movement, is already operational at Gould Adams Park Aquatic Centre in Queensland. It provides lifeguards with instant alerts via smartwatches, pinpointing potential incidents and enhancing response times.

  • Royal Life Saving Highlights Summer Job Opportunities In Aquatic Centres

With the operators of aquatic centres and seasonal swimming pools across Australia looking to fill job vacancies for summer, Royal Life Saving is highlighting roles in the sector - including lifeguards, swim instructors, customer service officers and aqua exercise instructors - pointing out that these roles not only keep our community safe but also help you build skills that are transferrable to many different careers. Aquatic Industry Development Manager, Jason Phillips highlighted a range of reasons to “work at your local pool”, explaining that “summer is almost here and local pools are on the lookout for enthusiastic people to join their teams.” “Whether you’re just finishing school or looking for your first job, working in the aquatic industry is a fantastic opportunity to develop career skills that go far beyond the pool deck.” There are many reason why you should join the aquatic industry as a career: A Fun and Active Environment:  Working at a pool or aquatic centre means spending your days in a lively and energetic atmosphere. For those who enjoy being active, engaging with the community, and working as part of a team, the aquatic industry offers an ideal work environment. Variety of Roles:  Whether you enjoy being active, helping people, or taking charge, the aquatic industry has a role for you. Lifeguards ensure everyone's safety; swim teachers help children and adults learn vital skills; aqua exercise instructors make health and fitness fun; and customer service officers keep things running smoothly. Each role is crucial in keeping pools safe and enjoyable places for everyone. Flexibility:  Whether you are a student, a parent, or someone looking for part-time work, the aquatic industry provides flexible work options. Many positions offer the chance to work during weekends, mornings, evenings, or holidays, making it easier to balance work with other commitments. Career Skills That Take You Further:  Lifeguarding doesn’t just prepare you for a job at the pool - it can lead to a career in healthcare or emergency services. Lifeguards are trained in first aid, CPR, and incident management, skills that are directly transferrable to roles in paramedicine, nursing, and law enforcement. Similarly, teaching swimming can provide a strong foundation for future careers in education, helping to develop communication, leadership, and instructional skills. Making a Difference:  One of the most rewarding aspects of working in the aquatic industry is the positive impact you can have on others. Aquatic facilities are often at the heart of a community, where people come together for fitness, fun and connection. Additionally, as a swim teacher, you help children and adults gain confidence in the water, potentially saving lives. As a lifeguard or duty manager, you are at the forefront of ensuring safety at our pools, playing a vital role in preventing drowning incidents. As an aqua exercise instructor you build a community of participants. Explore Your Career Pathways Royal Life Saving add “for those looking to grow in the industry, there are plenty of career advancement opportunities. • National Drowning Report Spotlight on New South Wales

Every year, Royal Life Saving produces a National Drowning Report. This report examines the factors that contribute to drowning deaths in Australia by examining who, where, when and how people have drowned in Australian waterways over the last year. Royal Life Saving has produced a National Drowning Report every year since 1995. A Spotlight on New South Wales There were 128 drowning deaths that occurred in NSW between July 1st 2023 to June 30th 2024. This is the highest number of drowning deaths to occur in the state since the National Fatal Drowning Database records began in July of 2002. The drowning rate of 1.53 per 100,000 population increased by 25% this financial year, compared to the 10-year average. The highest number of drowning deaths in NSW occurred among those aged 25-34 years and 45-54 years (16% each). However, the age group reporting the highest crude rates for drowning were those aged 75+ years. Drowning deaths in NSW mainly occurred at beaches (27%), followed by river / creeks (22%), while swimming and recreating (29%). People who lived in disadvantaged areas (IRSAD Decile 1-4) accounted for 27% of the total drowning deaths in NSW whereas, people who lived in the most advantaged areas (IRSAD Decile 9-10) accounted for 25% of all drowning deaths. Cost of Drowning According to research conducted by Royal Life Saving, the devastating impact of fatal and non-fatal drowning incidents had a staggering cost of more than $738,773,897 to New South Wales (NSW) in the 2023-24 financial year. This shocking figure, which encompasses the costs absorbed by the health system, emergency services, and coronial processes, as well as losses in productivity, highlights the dire consequences of water-related incidents in the state. Last year alone, NSW tragically lost 128 lives to fatal drowning, and an estimated 209 people suffered non-fatal drowning incidents, each leaving lasting and costly ripple effects across the community and economy. Every year, hundreds of families lose loved ones to drowning. It is our priority to reduce the burden of drowning in the community and ensure everyone can enjoy the water safely. The National Drowning Report 2024 helps us understand who, where, how and why these drowning deaths occur, so that we can work together to keep our communities safe. Whilst progress has been made in some areas, the number of people who drown each year remains persistent. As it starts to get warmer, remember to stay safe around the water:  Supervise children  Learn swimming and lifesaving skills  Wear a lifejacket  Swim between the red & yellow flags  Avoid alcohol & drugs around water  Know your limits and the conditions For more water safety tips and further information please visit: https://www.drowningprevention.org.au/watersafetytips

  • Mole Creek Pool to Reopen

The Mole Creek Swimming Pool will be back with a splash this summer with TasNetworks coming to the rescue. Royal Life Saving Tasmania has been successful in obtaining funding through TasNetworks’ Community Grants Program to provide vital training for 14 lifeguards who will volunteer their time at the pool this summer. Due to a critical shortage of trained lifeguards, the pool has been unable to operate for the past two years, depriving the Mole Creek community of a vital recreational resource. Karina Siggins, Manager Royal Life Saving Tasmania, said the troop of volunteers range in age from the youngest at 16 years with remainder between 33 -66 years of age. “The ages of these volunteers as Pool Lifeguards, depicts the dedication of community members to get the pool operating again,” Mrs Siggins said. Operated by the Mole Creek Progress Association, the Mole Creek Swimming Pool is a cherished community asset in rural Northwest Tasmania, that has served the Meander Valley for over 40 years. The volunteers will conduct lifeguard training at the end of September and following cleaning and maintenance by members of the Mole Creek Progress Association, the pool is due to reopen at the start of December in time for the school holidays. Chris Warr, Leader Major Projects Engagement, said TasNetworks’ Community Grants Program was making a real diff erence in communities across Tasmania like the rural town of Mole Creek by providing funding to support the re-opening of the Mole Creek Swimming Pool. “TasNetworks recognises the critical role that community recreational facilities play in creating a positive difference in the lives of Tasmanians,” Mr Warr said. “Supporting the reopening of the Mole Creek Swimming Pool means this key community resource is accessible for everyone in the community and beyond to enjoy, providing practical and long-lasting benefits. Through this support, we aim to help build local resilience, encourage strong social connections and prioritise the health and wellbeing of Tasmanian rural communities.” Media contact (not for publication) Interviews available. • World Drowning Prevention Day 2024

Drowning is sudden, abrupt, and shocking, with people often not realizing it's happening until it's too late. What leads to drowning often happens in just a few seconds: A small child slipping unnoticed into a pond or pool on a sunny afternoon; Feeling invincible after a few drinks and jumping into the ocean for a swim; Accepting that one extra passenger on the boat, despite knowing it might capsize; Deciding it's too much of a hassle to put on that lifejacket. So much can happen in a single moment. But with the right awareness and actions, what happens in those seconds can also be changed - for the better. In April 2021, the United Nations adopted the historic first Resolution on Global Drowning Prevention, recognising the scale of the problem, calling for coordinated action to prevent drowning and marking the 25 July as World Drowning Prevention Day. Drowning doesn’t have a single cause, or a single solution. But it can be prevented. Drowning is an issue that affects every nation of the world. Globally, nearly a quarter of a million people lose their lives to drowning every year. Almost 82,000 of them are children. In Australia hundreds of families lose loved ones to drowning every year. World Drowning Prevention Day aims to raise awareness of the importance of drowning prevention and to reduce preventable deaths.
