National Swimming and Water Safety Framework Swimming Pathways > National Swimming and Water Safety Framework > Benefits of Learn to Swim > Infant and Toddlers > Pre School Children > Primary School Children > Multicultural Learn to Swim > Adult Learn to Swim Swim Teacher Pathways > About the Guidelines > Competent Teachers > Capable teachers > Talented Teachers > Lead Teachers Course Calender The National Swimming and Water Safety Framework's ultimate goal is to increase the swimming and water safety skills of all Australians for lifelong safe and active participation in physical aquatic activities and recreation. It sets out a core structure to enable people to develop the skills, knowledge, understanding, attitudes and behaviours they need to enjoy a range of aquatic environments safely. The Framework is intended for those that influence the learning opportunities and experiences for swimming and water safety education and guides those responsible for developing, providing or selecting a swimming and water safety program. Research Underpinning the framework Research into how swimming and water safety skills are attained has informed the development of the Framework. Listen to the video to learn more about some of the key findings from the research that underpins the Framework and what it aims to achieve. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1XKSOJ3AdVs The framework at a glance The Framework provides three benchmarks for children at age 6, 12 and 17 years. It aims to inform Government policy makers and swim schools, but is an important resource for parents to understand the lifelong benefits that learning to swim provides. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8pPeDfy0CD0 National Benchmarks The Australian Water Safety Council has established three National Benchmarks for Swimming and Water Safety Education as the desired competency standards every Australian should have the opportunity to acquire and maintain. The National Benchmarks provide a clear description of student learning and are therefore, a useful starting point or driver for the development of teaching and learning programs. The benchmarks allow teachers to monitor student learning and to make judgements about student progress and achievement. These National Benchmarks for Swimming and Water Safety Education can be achieved by progressing through the development milestones of the National Swimming and Water Safety Framework. This includes minimising the risk of drowning, injury and illness for patrons undertaking swimming and recreational pursuits. One of the most valuable tools to improve the operation of a facility is to develop and implement operational policies and procedures. Operational policies and procedures provide a framework in which decisions can be made and implemented. If written correctly, they should guide someone unfamiliar to the facility through the day-to-day procedures and provide a valuable resource to support continuous operation. Royal Life Saving can work with the owners and operators of aquatic facilities to ensure effective systems are well-documented and implemented for the safe operation of aquatic facilities. In preparing operational policies and procedures for an aquatic organisation, Royal Life Saving aims to help meet the following objectives: Document the systems employed by the organisation in the operation of the aquatic facility Provide evidence of compliance to the organisation’s Work Health & Safety Policies Provide evidence of compliance to regulations and accepted industry guidelines Reduce training time for new employees Standardise processes for consistency and reliability across all employees Ensure continuous operation of the aquatic facility to an acceptable standard Contact Us Royal Life Saving is active across all communities. Our members, volunteers, trainers, employees and lifesavers are found in almost all communities. Contact Us
